Spring has Sprung... Finally

We have been patiently waiting for the nice weather to arrive. Now that it is here, the sun it out, and the tulips are in bloom, a lot of us have wasted no time jumping into the dirt. Gardening can be a relaxing and stress relieving activity for a lot of people. The beauty that comes along with it is also very rewarding and worth the dirt and sweat.

Although gardening has many perks, there are also some things to think about when moving your body in the garden. When gardening we spend a lot of time up and down and bending over and kneeling. Digging and carrying bags of heavy dirt can be difficult as well.

We want to offer some tips for how to prepare, move and use your body so that the 'aftermath' of the work does not take away from the rewarding result and experience!

  • Remember that it is ok to ask for help or to accept when it is offered. Taking turns with your family members to dig or carry heavy items will lower your risk of injury

  • Taking a short walk or doing some stretches before working in the garden will help loosen up your muscles and joints

  • Be aware of your posture while planting by using a short bench to sit on and encourage a straight back

  • Try using a kneeling pad and taking breaks for comfort

  • Be aware of your posture while digging by bending at the knees and tightening your core, keeping your body in a nice straight line without excessive twisting.

  • Drink lots of water to avoid dehydration and don't forget to have fun!
